The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) – What You Need to Know

The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is a federal program designed to make dental care more affordable for Canadians without private dental insurance coverage. If your household income is under $90,000 a year and you don’t have coverage through work or another provider, you can apply for reduced-cost dental care.

At our Medicine Hat dental clinic, Tori Plaza Dental, we help patients navigate CDCP coverage to make preventive and restorative care affordable.

Are Dental Visits Free Under CDCP?

Not always. CDCP helps cover essential dental treatments, but it’s not fully free for everyone. The amount covered depends on your household income, and some services require a co-payment—your portion of eligible fees.

Adjusted Family Net Income CDCP Covers (at federal fee guide) You Pay (co-payment)
Less than $70,000 100% of eligible fees 0%
$70,000–$79,999 60% of eligible fees 40%
$80,000–$89,999 40% of eligible fees 60%
Note: CDCP pays according to its federal fee guide, which may be lower than our clinic’s usual fees. You are responsible for any balance beyond the CDCP coverage amount.

What Treatments Are Covered?

CDCP covers essential oral health care, including:

  • Exams, X-rays, and cleanings
  • Fillings and root canals
  • Tooth extractions and dentures

Some treatments (especially complex or specialized procedures) require pre-approval from Health Canada. Pre-authorizations are generally reviewed within 10 business days.

How to Apply & What to Expect

All eligible Canadians can now apply for CDCP online through the federal portal. Applications opened to seniors (65+), children, and adults with a Disability Tax Credit in earlier phases. As of October 2025, all adults aged 18 and up without dental insurance are also eligible to apply.

  • Apply online with your SIN, Notice of Assessment, and basic details.
  • Once approved, Sun Life (the program administrator) will send your CDCP card and official coverage start date (usually within three months).
  • Bring your CDCP card to your appointment so claims can be submitted directly.
Reminder: Coverage starts on the date in your Sun Life welcome letter, not the date you apply—be sure to verify your coverage before booking treatment.
